Topic 2- Dreaming Flashcards
According to Freud, all dreams…
Have a subconscious meaning, and are sexual depending what has been determined in the phallic stage.
Hobson and McCarley created what?
Activation synthesis theory.
What is the activation synthesis theory?
Random neurones fired in the brain during REM sleep and the brain synthesises them into a story.
Strengths of Hobson and McCarley’s theory.
There is evidence of REM sleep occurring night after night.
Still being investigated- Hobson in 1999 said there could be dream meanings.
Brain activity is likely to be genetic, and dreams seem to have meaning a they come from neurones that have a specific purpose when awake.
Weaknesses of activation-synthesis.
Thoughts in dreams aren’t that random- seen to have basis from last days worries/ thoughts.
Based on the fact dreams are bizarre and make no sense-but Hobson was in a study where that applied to 34/200.
Children under five dream less but have same amount of REM sleep, suggesting dreams not simply linked to REM.
Snoring and breathing problems are what type of sleep disorder?
Physiological.
Psychological sleep disorders are linked to-
The brain and mental health.
