Topic 2 Cells Flashcards
What are the seven life processes
Movement
Reproduction
Sensitivity
Growth
Respiration
Excretion
Nutrition
(MRS GREN)
What is meant by sensitivity
Responding to surroundings
What is meant by nutrition
the food you eat
What is meant by excretion
Removal of waste
What is meant by reproduction
Producing offspring
What is meant by respiration
Release of energy from the food eaten
What is meant by growth
Increase in size
What is meant by movement
Changing position
What are all living things made up of
Cells
What equipment do you use to look at cells
microscope
What part of the microscope changes the magnification of the image
objective lens - x4, x40 or x100
What part of the microscope do you set your prepared slide on
The stage
How do you see an image on the microscope
Look down the eyepiece lens and adjust the stage by using the coarse and fine focusing knobs
What are the 3 parts of an animal cell
Cell membrane
cytoplasm
nucleus
What is the function (job) of the nucleus
COntrols cell activities
What is the function (job) of the cell membrane
Lets materials enter and leave the cell
What happens in the cytoplasm
All chemical reactions of the cell
In addition to the cell membrane, nucleus and cytoplasm - what other parts are found in a plant cell ONLY
Cell wall
Chloroplasts
Vacuole
What is the function of the cell wall
Support
What do chloroplasts do
Trap light energy and make food in photosynthesis
What is found in the vacuole
Cell sap
What is meant by specialised cells
Cells that have a shape that allows them to do a particular job e.g. nerve cells are very long to carry impulses quickly round body
Red blood cells have no nucleus so they can carry more oxygen
Plant have root hair cells that have long extensions so they can get more water
What is a tissue
A group of the SAME cells that work together to do a particular job
What is an organ
A group of the different tissues that work together to do a particular job
Give 2 examples of organs found in an animal
Heart
lungs
liver
skin
Give 2 examples of organs found in plants
leaf
root
What is an organ system
A group of the different organs that work together to do a particular job
What organ system is needed for digesting food - name some of the organs of that system
Digestive system - made up of stomach, small and large intestine
What organ system is needed for carry food and oxygen around the body - name some of the organs of that system-
CIrculatory system
Heart
blood vessels
blood
