Topic 2- Bartlett’s(1932) Theory Of Reconstructive Memory Flashcards
How are schemas formed?
Our schemas are formed throughout our lives through experiences, our schemas are unique and personal to us
How do schemas influence memory
Cause us to ignore or change or add details when we recall memories
Omissions
Leaving out unfamiliar or unpleasant details when recalling something
Transformations
Details are changed to make them more familiar and rational
Familiarization
Changing unfamiliar details to align with our own schema
Rationalization
Adding details when recalling something to give reason for something that did not originally fit into our schema
Two strengths of the theory
1- Bartlett used folk stories and images which is a realistic use of memory, therefore the study is ecologically valid
2- Has real world application
Two weaknesses of the theory
1- reasults were interpreted by Bartlett, which means that his findings could be subjective and biased which is considered unscientific
2- Bartlett used unscientific procedure and controls, this weakens his research therefore low reliability, unstandardized procedures and weak research
