Topic 19: Organisms and their Environment Flashcards
Food Chain
Shows the transfer of energy (food) from one organism to the next beginning with a producer.
Producer
An organism that makes its own organic nutrients usually using energy from sunlight through photosynthesis.
food web
A network of interconnected food chains.
Consumer
An organism that gest its energy by feeding on other organisms.
Herbivore
An animal that gets its energy by eating plants.
Carnivore
An animal that gets its energy by feeding on other animals.
Decomposer
An organism that gets its energy from dead or waster organic material.
Trophic Level
The posisiton of an organism in a food chain food web or ecological pyrimid.
Lag phase
Where growth of the popuklation is slow.
Exponential (log) phase
Where is populatiopn is increasing rapidly.
Stationary Phase
Where the size of the population remians the same size.
Death phase
Where population numbers drop.
Tertiary consumer
Predators that feed on secondary consumers.
Pyramid of Biomass
How much mass the creature at each level would have withoit including the water that is in the organism.
Population
A group of organisms of one speciecs living in the same area the same time.
