Topic 14: Community- Structure and Dynamics Flashcards
What is a community?
A community is a group of interacting populations in a given location
What is richness (S)?
the biological structure of a community is the mix of a species and their relative abundance
What is the Simpsons diversity index (D)?
one way to help quantify the differences between community diversity and richness
How are species organized by trophic level?
each link in the chain is considered a trophic level
How are species organized by guilds?
acquire common resource/energy at the same trophic level
What is bottom-up control?
productivity and abundance of populations at any given trophic level are controlled by the level below
What is top-down control?
Predators control prey abundance and their behaviour
What is trophic cascade?
one trophic level causes a powerful ripple of indirect interactions that can influence the entire community
What is the organismal (holistic) approach? where does it work well?
focus is on how species have evolved together where interactions have shaped the specific community
works well in explaining communities that are easy to recognize as clusters of species that rise and fall together.
What is the individualistic (continuum) concept? where does it work well?
focus is on individual species and how they respond to abiotic factors independently of each other
works well in explaining communities with unclear boundaries as communities overlap each other with borders that feel somewhat arbitrary.
Where does primary succession occur?
occurs on new, previously unvegetated sites, no soil present.
Where does secondary succession occur?
occurs on disturbed sites. environment is “prepared” and a soil present.
