Topic 13 pt 1: Gene Inheritance Flashcards
What is an allelic interaction
Interaction between alleles at the same locus/gene -> monohybrid
What is a gene interaction
Interactions between alleles at different loci/genes -> dihybrid
Quantitative/continuous trait
Dozens of genes can be affecting
e.g. height
When two genes affect the same trait, what happens to the ratio of the dihyrbid cross?
9:3:3:1 but with new phenotypes
Epistatic vs hypostatic gene/allele
Epistatic = one allele is expressed over the others (“dominant”)
Hypostatic = expression is masked by epistatic gene/allele (“recessive”)
Epistatic interactions occur when…
Alleles at one locus mask or trump expression of alleles at a different locus
How is epistatic interaction different than dominance
Involves alleles at different genes
