Topic 11: Describing a Multiatomic System Flashcards
What is a multi atomic/bonded system?
system with high number of atoms
What is Pauli’s exclusion principal?
it’s impossible for any electrons bound to the same atom to have the same quantum numbers
Describe bonds of solids
highest bond energy; much higher than thermal motion
Describe bond energy of liquids
lower energy than solids but higher than of gases, more energy than thermal motion; lower bond energy allows fluidity
Describe bond energy of gases
lowest bond energy, similar to that of thermal motion.
What is an ideal gas?
A theoretical gas made of atoms that don’t interact with each other except for in elastic collisions- highest level of disorder of any state of matter; describes gases under ideal conditions
What is the ideal gas law?
pV=NRT where p is
What does the Maxwell-Boltzmann distribution function describe?
the deviations from the average velocity of particles
Describe states with structural order
there are interactions/bonds between atoms or molecules that lead to “long range, periodic order” that keep the molecules together
What does isotropic mean?
when a physical property has the same value no matter in what direction it was measured
Describe crystals
ideal state of order, most ordered; anisotropic, mechanical stability, defined volume and shape. Long range order
Describe liquids
definitive volume but no shape, takes shape of it’s container, isotropic, deformability
What are the 4 fundamental forces?
Gravity, electromagnetic force (columb and magnets), “strong” nuclear forces keeping protons together, “weak” nuclear forces building up nuclei involved in radioactive isotopes
What are the 4 fundamental forces?
Gravity, electromagnetic force (coulomb and magnets), “strong” nuclear forces keeping protons together, “weak” nuclear forces building up nuclei involved in radioactive isotopes
