Topic 10 - Using recources: Flashcards
Renewable energy:
Sources of power that quickly replenish themesleves and can be used again
Potable water:
Water that is safe to drink
* Potable water is NOT ‘pure’- it contains dissolved substances
* Methods used to produce potable water depend on available supplies of water and the location in the UK:
1. An appropriate source of fresh water is selected
2. Water is passed through filter beds- removes different sized insoluble substances
3. The water is then sterilised- kills microbes
Desalination:
- Process of producing potable water
- Howevere, it is very expensive
How correct quality water is produced:
It must be free of poisonous salts and harmful microbes at it is essential for life.
- Water is passed through a mesh screen to remove large bits
- Chemicals are added- makes solids and microbes stick together to form sediment
- There is then anaerobic digestion of sewage sludge
- The water is then sterilised with chlroine- kills microbes
Alternative methods of extracting metals:
- The earth’s resource of metal ores are limited
- Copper ores are becoming scarce- there are now new ways of extracting copper from low grade ores including phytomining and bioleaching
- These methods avoid traditional mining methods of digging large amounts of rock
Phytomining:
Uses plants to absorb metal compounds
* Plants are harvested
* Then burned
* This produces ash that contains the metal compounds
* The pure metal can be ecxtracted using electrolysis
Bioleaching:
- Uses bacteria
- Produces leachate solutions
- Contains metal compounds
- The pure metal can then be obtained using electrolysis
