Topic 10 Infectious Disease Flashcards
What is an Infectious disease
A disease caused by a pathogen which is transmissible
What is a transmission cycle
The way in which a pathogen transfers from one host to another
Type of pathogens
- Virus
- Bacteria
- Fungi
- Protoctists
Cause of Malaria
Caused by Plasmodium falciporum, P. Malarie, P. Vivax, P. Ovale
Transmitted by:
- insect vector (mosquito)
- blood transfusion
- contaminated needles
- mother to child across placenta
How Malaria is transmitted
- Infected mosquitoes bites humans
- Plasmodium travels to the liver and multiplies
- Plasmodium burst out of the lover and invade RBCs
- Multiply in RBCs and burst out to invade more
- symptoms start
- Infected person in bitten by 2nd mosquito where it further multiplies inside the mosquito
Symptoms of Malaria
- fever
- shivering
- sweating
- headache
- anaemia
- muscle pain
How to prevent Malaria
- reduce number of (anopheles) Mosquitoes
- avoid being bitten by Mosquitoes
- use of drugs
Cause of Cholera
Caused by Vibrio Cholerae
Transmitted by:
- infected water or food with facal matter
Symptoms of Cholera
- Diahorrea (dehydration)
- vomitting
- nausea
How Cholera is transmitted
- Bacteria are ingested by eating contaminated food/ water
- Reach the Small intestine and multiplies inside
- releases toxin Choleragen
- Choleragen causes chloride ions to be released into the lumen of small intestine
- water follows by osmosis
- loss of water and salts from the epithelial cells
How to prevent Cholera
- adequate treatment for sewage
- clean water
- water treated with chlorine
- vaccination
Treatment for Cholera
Oral rehydration (solution of water, glucose and ions)
Cause of Tuberculosis
Caused by Mycobacterium Tuberculosis/ bovis
- airborne
- droplets of infected patients
How to prevent Tuberculosis
- use of BCG vaccine
- routine testing of cattles
- heating milk to kill TB bacteria
Cause of HIV/AIDS
Caused by immunodeficiency virus
transmitted by:
- direct exchange of body fluid
- contaminated needles
- pregnancy
- sexual intercourse
