Topic 10 and 11 Flashcards
Dynamic equilibrium
State in which the rates of the forward and backward reactions are equal and the concentrations of the reactants and the products remain constant.
Yield
The concentration of the desired product at equilibrium
To check whether an experiment is long enough to reach equilibrium
Repeat
Leave for longer than that time
The titre value/Kc value/concentration of reactants and products should remain unchanged
Expression for Kc
products / reactants to power of balancing numbers
Position of equilibrium and Kc
Larger Kc, eqm more right
Smaller value of Kc, eqm more left
Factors that affect Kc value
Only temperature!!
Kc value when you reverse the reaction
1/Kc
Kc value when you x2 the reaction
Kc squared
Kc value when you add a different equation
Kc1 x Kc2
Mole fraction of gas A equation
number of moles of gas A / total number of moles of gasses
Partial pressure definition
The pressure the gas would exert if it occupied the container alone (same units as the eqm pressure given in question)
Total pressure equation
Sum of individual partial pressures
Partial pressure of A equation
mole fraction of A x total pressure
Expression for Kp
Partial pressures of products multiplied / partial pressures of reactants multiplied to the power of the balancing numbers
What happens when the initial concentration of a substance of in a reaction is changed?
The Kp/Kc values do not change, because they are only affected by a change in temperature
But the concentrations of other reactants and products change to keep the Kp/Kc value constant (to restore the ratio)
