Topic 1 - Year 1 - Biological Molecules - ATP Flashcards
Why is being able to store and release energy really important for plants and animals?
Energy is required for all life processes , plant and animal cells need energy for biological processes to occur.
How do plant and animal cells release energy ?
Plants and Animals realise energy from glucose in the process of respiration.
Why does a cell need to produce ATP
A cell needs to produce ATP as it cannot get its energy directly from glucose , so in respiration the energy released from glucose is used to make the ATP.
What does ATP stand for ?
Adenosine Triphosphate
There are 5 components in 1 molecule of ATP what are these 5?
- Adenine x 1
- Ribose x 1
- Phosphate groups x 3
Why is ATP known as a nucleotide derivative?
Adenine triphosphate is known as a nucleotide derivative as it is a modified form of a nucleotide.
When ATP is made where does it go?
When ATP is made in repsiration it diffuses to the part of the cell that needs it.
Where is the energy in a molecule of ATP stored?
In a molecule of ATP the energy is stored in high energy bonds between phosphate groups.
When energy is needed by a cell what type of reaction occurs in order to break it down?
A hydrolysis reaction breaks ATP (adenosine triphosphate) down into ADP (adenosine diphosphate) and Pi (Inorganic phosphate)
What is ATP brown down into ?
Adenosine triphosphate is broken down into adenosine diphosphate and a inorganic phosphate
What does breaking the bond between the phosphate groups do?
Releases Energy
Which enzyme catalyses the break down of adenosine triphosphate into adenosine diphosphate and an inorganic phosphate ?
ATP hydrolase
In which type of reaction is ADP and Pi re-synthesised to for ATP ?
Condensation reaction
In which metabolic reaction in plant and animal cells can ATP be re-synthesised?
Respiration and Photosynthesis
Which Enzyme catalysis’s the reaction between adenosine diphosphate and a inorganic phosphate to make adenosine triphosphate ?
ATP synthase
