topic 1 - Willingham's learning theory Flashcards
what is willingham’s theory?
willingham’s theory emphasises on practice and effort and how it enables us to master knowledge and skills. willingham’s theory also focuses on the effects of learning on our development as well as our memory spans.
why is knowledge important?
because it can free up space in our working memory which allows us to use mental skills such as problem solving.
according to willingham how do we master knowledge and skills?
practice and effort
why is practice and effort important?
because it can lead to mastering a skill which is when the skill or skills can be preformed automatically
identify 2 different ways that knowledge can be built according to willingham. (2)
rehearsal of the short term memory
doing quizzes or different tasks to help you learn the material needed
what strategies supports cognitive development?
- use problems that are within a students capacity but still requires some effort
- understand the students likely stage of development when planning activities
- remember that a students ability to do something can change from day to day
- consider other aspects other than the students development such as they might not understand the task given
what strategies support psychical development?
- focus on what movements are suitable and what order they need to be preformed in
- practice the movements in the correct order enough times to make the muscle commands automatic.
- use conscious effort such as make changes into your routine in order to develop the motor skill.
what strategies support social development?
- building on a child’s ability to take the view of someone else
- demonstrating appropriate social behaviour
- help a child stop impulsive behaviour, which means behaving without considering the consequences an mainly without thought.
- encourage practice, which requires self-regulation. Children need self-regulation because there are often other things
- Delay giving rewards for a task to encourage a child to keep working at it, which requires them to solve have self-control.
what are the strengths of this theory?
willinghams work can be applied to education and other situations to promote a child’s development in a positive way.
what are the weaknesses of this theory?
??? no evident weaknesses
