What things should you consider before starting an exam?
- Do any special precautions need to take place?
- Do I need any more information before undertaking treatment?
- If the patient had a acute flare of their condition while under my care, would I know what to do?
How can you ask about medical history?
- Do you consider yourself fit and well?
- Do you see a GP regularly for any health problem?
- Are you seeing any specialists for treatment?
- Have you had any past or recent hospital admissions or operations? Or future ones planned?
What is another name for Review of Systems?
Systems Inquiry. 2-3 questions you can ask about each bodily system to identify any underlying undiagnosed health problems
Cardiovascular system - chest pain, pain on laying down, any palpitations
Respiratory system - wheezing, persistent cough, productive cough
GI system - vomiting/diarrhoea/constipation?, do you choke on any liquid or solid food, any weight loss, any abdominal pain, any blood or mucus in stools?
MSK - do your joints swell, joint stiffness or locking
Neuro - any fits or faints, headache, visual disturbance, weakness or odd sensations
Which medications should you ask about?
Any prescribed, any purchased OTC, any recreational or illicit, any recently stopped
After asking about the meds a patient is on, what should you ask about?
If they’ve experienced allergies or adverse drug reactions. What happened and what action was taken.
What is the medic alert bracelet?
A band a pt wears sometimes that gives info on health conditions that the patient has.
