What ways are there of giving anaesthesia in dentistry?

A
  • Cooling effect of topical ethyl chloride 8-10 degrees
  • Pressure such as using mirror handle can overstimulate the nerves and lead to anaesthesia
  • Radiofrequency ablation can result in irreversible blockade

What modes of administration are there for LA?

A

Topical - benzocaine gel used on gingiva
Subcutaneous - infiltrating skin of cheek before excising a BCC
Epidural - child birth or hip/knee replacement
Nerve Block - Injecting an LA agent AROUND a nerve
Intrathecal - Injection directly placed into subarachnoid space
