What is the difference between local and general anaesthesia?
General - pt unconscious
LA - patient lucid and can commnuicate
What is LA used for in dentistry?
To provide analgesia and to enable surgical procedures to be undertaken.
What ways are there of giving anaesthesia in dentistry?
- Cooling effect of topical ethyl chloride 8-10 degrees
- Pressure such as using mirror handle can overstimulate the nerves and lead to anaesthesia
- Radiofrequency ablation can result in irreversible blockade
What modes of administration are there for LA?
Topical - benzocaine gel used on gingiva
Subcutaneous - infiltrating skin of cheek before excising a BCC
Epidural - child birth or hip/knee replacement
Nerve Block - Injecting an LA agent AROUND a nerve
Intrathecal - Injection directly placed into subarachnoid space
