*Topic 1-elements mixtures and compounds Flashcards
Explain what an element is
Materials that cannot be split up into anything simpler by chemical methods. They contain only one type of atom
Give 3 examples of elements
Aluminium
Calcium
Bromine
Name properties of metals
Shiny solids Good conductors of heat Usually have high melting points Usually malleable Can be a gas, solid or liquid at room temperature
Name properties of non metals
Non-metallic solids tend to be soft and brittle
Usually dull
Poor conductors of heat
Usually have low melting and boiling points
What is a compound
A pure substance containing atoms of two or more elements chemically combined. It can not be separated easily. It has different properties from the elements that it contains
What is a mixture
Two or more substances mixed together, they can be separated easily by physical methods
Describe who iron and sulphur mixture can be separated according to their physical properties
Iron is a grey, shiny solid
Sulfur is a yellow powder
Iron-sulfur mixture is yellow power, grey solid
Iron Sulfide is a grey black solid
What is a molecule
Two or more atoms chemically bonded together
