*Atomic Structure And Bonding Flashcards
Recall the charge of the sub-atomic particles, protons, electrons and neutrons
Proton- +1
Neutron- 0
Electron- -1
What has a relative charge and what is located inside of it
The nucleus has a positive charge as the protons are located inside it
What does atomic number=
Atomic number=the no. of protons inside the nucleus
What does the mass number equal
Mass number=no. of protons+no of neutrons inside nucleus
Recall the laws for filling electrons into shells
1st shell can hold only 2 electrons 2nd shell can hold up to 8 and 3rd shell can hold up to 8 electrons
Identify and describe trends in the outer electron structure of atoms and the group to which they belong
No. of the outermost electrons is the same as the group number
Recall the names of group 1,2,7 and 0 elements
Group 1=The Alkali Metals
Group 2=Alkaline Earth Metals
Group 7=The Halogens
Group 0=Noble Gases
Describe the properties of the elements in Group 1
Stored under oil
All are soft
Reactivity increases as you go down the group
They all react with water to form an Alkali
Describe the properties of Group 2 elements
React with water
Reactions are less intense than those with Alkali metals
React vigorously with oxygen
Abundant in the Earth’s crust
Describe the properties of the elements in Group 7
Low melting and boiling points
Non Metals
The melting points then increase as you go down the group
Describe the properties of the elements in Group 0
Non Metals
Very unreactive gases
Colourless
