conformity
form of social influence, where follow along with the majority position.adopt behaviors attitudes and values.
compliance
exposed to views or actions of the majority, agree with opinion publicly but disagree privately to avoid disapproval. e.g laughing at a joke that was not funny.
identification
accept influence as want to be associated with another person or group .e.g social smoker finds it enjoyable but would never smoke alone
internalisation
individual accepts influence because content of attitude or behavior proposed is consistent with there own value system .e.g living with a vegan and becoming vegan yourself.
informational social influence isi
result of desire to be right.likely to occur when unsure of answer- in an ambiguous situation or if the others are more experienced. such as shaping political opinion. feins 2007 study

demonstrated how judgement of candidates performance in the us presidential debates could be influenced by knowledge of others reactions. this shows that participants were influenced by the reaction of others as so produced large shifts in participants judgments of the candidates performance.
normative social influence nsi
form of influence whereby an individual conforms with the expectations of the majority in order to gain approval, due to having a fear of rejection, usually occur when in a group of peers who want to impress. must believe they are under surveillance by the group., e.g smoking lunkinbach and perkins 2003

guests exposed to to the normative message that 75% guests reused their towels each day and after this message went up, was a 25% reduction in replacing towels. inclined to follow majority in desire to be liked.
