Topic 1 Cell Structure and Transport Flashcards
What is the function of a nucleus?
It contains genetic information that controls the functions of a cell
What is the function of the cell membrane?
It controls what enters or leaves the cell
What is the function of the cytoplasm?
It is where many cell activities and chemical reactions within a cell occur
What is the function of mitochondria?
They provide energy from aerobic respiration?
What is the function of ribosomes?
They synthesize (make) proteins
What is the function of chloroplasts?
Photosynthesis occurs here
What is the function of a permanent vacuole?
It is used to store water and other chemicals as cell sap
What is the function of a cell wall?
It strengthens and supports the cell (made of cellulose in plants)
What is a DNA loop?
A loop of DNA, not enclosed within a nucleus
What is a plasmid?
A small circle of DNA, may contain genes associated with antibiotic resistance
