Biology Y11 Term 1 Flashcards
What is a Phenotype?
The characteristic you would physically see in individuals.
What is a Genotype?
Genes/ Alleles that cause the phenotype.
Through which processes can mutation arise?
Meiosis and Sexual Reproduction.
Describe the potential effects a mutation can have on a population of organism.
- The organism may not survive
- The organism could gain a beneficial trait
- The organism could show no changes
What is an allele?
Different versions of the same gene.
What is selective breeding?
The process of a human breeding plants or animals with desired characteristics together to create offspring with those selected traits.
What is continuous data?
Data that shows variation as it changes in a population.
What is discontinuous data?
Data that either shows a characteristic or doesn’t show a characteristic.
Why is variation in populations beneficial?
If the environment changes the organisms have a better chance of adapting and surviving.
What are the dangers of reducing genetic variation?
It can lead to the inability to adapt to new situations and being prone to diseases due to recessive traits being accumulated.
