TOPIC 1 Cell Biology Flashcards
What are eukaryotes
Plants and animls
What is the function of the nucleus
Contains genetic material that controls the activities of the cell
What are the function of ribosomes
These are where proteins are made. We sometimes call them the site of synthesis
What is the function of the cytoplasm
Gel like substance where most chemical reactions happen. It contains enzymes that control these chemical reactions
What is the role of the mitochondria
It uses aerobic respiration which releases energy for the cell to use
What are found in plant cells but not animal cells
Permanent vacuole, cell wall, chloroplast
What is the role of chloroplasts
It uses photosynthesis, which involves using light energy from the sun to make glucose.
The green pigment that absorbs the light energy is called chlorophyll. This is what makes plants green
What’s the vacuole
A large sac in the middle of the cell, that contains a watery solution of sugars and salts(cell sap). Helps maintain the structure and shape of the cell.
What is the cell wall
It is made of cellulose. Which makes it strong and allows it to maintain its shape of the cell
What organisms are bacteria classed as
Prokaryotic
True or false? Bacteria have both a cell wall and cell membrane
True
What is bacteria
Bacteria only consist of a single cell (they are unicellular)
What is not found in bacteria
Nucleus
What is the prokaryotic cell wall composed of?
Peptidoglycan
What are plasmids
Small rings of DNA
They also carry genes that provide genetic advantages e.g antibiotic resistance
