Q

What is the role of the right ventricle

A

Pumps deoxygenated blood, to the lungs to take in oxygen. The blood then returns to the heart

6
Q

What is the role of the left ventricle

A

Pumps oxygenated blood around all the other organs in the body. The blood gives up its oxygen at body cells. And Deoxygenated blood returns to the heart to be pumped out of the lungs again.

Q

What is the role and structure of the arteries

A

Pump blood out of the heart at high pressure, so the artery walls are strong and elastic.
They have a thick layer of muscle tissue and thick layer of elastic so they can stretch and spring back easily
The walls are thick compared to the lumen which is the whole in the middle

Q

What is the role of the capillaries

A

Capillaries are tiny
They come in close contact with the cells in our body to exchange substances and provide useful products like nutrients and oxygen
They take away waste products like carbon dioxide
They have a permable wall so substances can diffuse easily through them
They have a small lumen
There walls are usually only one wall thick so increases the rate of diffusion by decreasing the distance by which it occurs

17
Q

What is the role and structure of the vein

A

The vein are relatively large
They have the biggest lumen to help blood flow despite the low the pressure
The blood pressure is low so there walls dont need to be as thick
They have valves to prevent the blood from flowing backwards
