Toothwear- (Intro+Abrasion) Flashcards
What problems may be faced with tooth wear cases?
1) No intercuspal space for restoration to be placed.
2) Lack of tooth tissue for build ups or crown preps.
3) Increased gingival display (due to dento-alveolar compensation)
4) Pulpal problems
5) Changes to patient’s OVD
What is dento-alveolar compensation?
It is the continued eruption of the teeth in response to wear. It leads to a change in the position of the gingival margin.
Define abrasion
Tooth wear caused by contact with extraneous (foreign) objects.
Abrasion can mainly be seen on palatal/lingual surfaces. True or False?
False.
Can be seen mainly on buccal/labial surfaces.
List some aetiological factors of abrasion
1) Brushing too hard with toothbrush
2) Abrasive toothpaste
3) Habits:
-Tobacco chewing
-Pen chewing
-Pipe smoking
-Wire stripping
4) Industrial
5) Iatrogenic (crowns are considered as an extraneous object and so can be a cause for abrasion)
