Toothpaste/Mouthwash/Varnishes Flashcards
what are the constituents of toothpaste?
abrasives humectant binding agent preservatives detergent colouring agents
what are abrasives?
20-40%
e.g calcium carbonate
used to aid plaque/stain removal without causing wear of enamel and dentine
what is a humectant?
10-30%
glycerol/sorbitol
used to retain moisture and drying out if exposed to air
what is a binding agent?
1-5%
alginates/gum
prevents separation of solid and liquid whilst storing
what are preservatives?
0.05-0.5%
alcohols. benzoates, formaldyyhydes
prevents bacterial growth
what are detergents?
sodium lauryl sulphate
loosens debris, foaming action
what are colouring agents?
titanium oxide
artificial dyes
what are flavouring agents?
aromatic oils
peppermint
menthol etc
imporves taste
what is a solvent?
20-40%
water
dissolves other ingredients resulting in a paste
what are antibacterials?
triclosan
antibacterials reduce plaque formation
what are anticalculus agents?
prophosphates
inhibits plaque mineralisation
desensitizing agents?
- strontium/potassium chloride/potassium acetate
reduce/eradticates sensitivity
what buffers may be in toothpaste?
bicarbonate
reduce acidity of plaque
how does chlorhexidine work?
kills bacteria by damaging the cell wall
greater and more prolonged effect
has ability to adhere to tooth surface for long periods of time
what are the disadvantages of chlorhexidine?
unpleasant taste alters taste sensation stains teeth/oral mucosa/tongue encourages calculus formation may cause parotid swelling/mucosal erosion
what are the properties of phenolic mouthwashes?
only moderate plaque reducing capabilities
strong flavor
poor retention
high alchohol content
what are oxygenating mouthwashes?
contain hydrogen peroxide
fizz up in mouth creating oxygen bubbles
oxygen bubbles kill certain types of anaerobic bacteria
specifically for ANUG
what is sanguinarine?
moderate plaque reduction
what is propolis?
clinical studies show that this is not effective against plaque bacteria
what is the conc of fluoride varnish?
26 000ppmF
what is cervitec?
chlorhexidine varnish
applied to root surface to reduce sensitivity
