tooth tissue loss Flashcards
what can tooth tissue loss be caused by
1) Attrition
2) erosion
3) abrasion
4) trauma
5) tooth tissue defects during formation
6) abfraction concept
attrition
Wear due to tooth tooth contact
- affects mainly incisal/occlusal surfaces
- attrition is a natural part of aging, will continue throughout life
what can cause attraction (other than natural)
1) Bruxisum and/or clenching
- habit
- can be compounded by different malocclusions eg class II incisors or cross bites
- loss of posterior teeth elads to loss of posterior support, anterior teeth do more work
bruxism
Parafunctional activity of the muscles of mastication
- often whilst sleeping
- loud
- stress related
how can you treat bruxism
- jaw exercise
- hard/soft splints/NightBiteGuards (coverings for the lower/upper arch)
- can refer to specliasts for treatment
erosion
Tooth loss due to non carious acid dissolution
- initially of enamel then dentine
where can acid come from
drinks
food
swimming
battery manufacturing ect
erosion aetiology
Extrinsic factors - diet/occupational - soft drinks/sports drinks - alcohol - citrus fruit - pickles vinegar - occupational Intrinsic factrs - bulimia - pregnancy (vomiting/acid reflux) - innless (vomit/acid reflux)
abrasion
tooth wear due to contact with food or other objects
trauma aetiology
- falls
- bikes
- swings
- contact sports
- non accidental injury
- increased overjet is a risk factor, teeth pre othro eg in class 2 can be at risk of fracture
- most common in 8-10 year old boys
- mouthguards can prevent this
