What are maxillary teeth?
Upper teeth
Maxillary teeth are located in the upper jaw.
What are mandibular teeth?
Lower teeth
Mandibular teeth are located in the lower jaw.
What are anterior teeth?
Upper and lower front 6 teeth, comprising of: central incisors, lateral incisors, canines
Anterior teeth are primarily responsible for cutting food.
What are incisor teeth?
The four front teeth usually center of the lower and upper dental arch
Incisors are used for cutting food.
What are canine (cuspid) teeth?
Tooth immediately behind the incisor teeth
Canines are also considered anterior teeth.
What does ‘labial’ describe?
Surface of teeth that is in proximity to the lips
This term typically refers to the front surface of incisor teeth.
What does ‘palatal’ describe?
Surface of teeth that is adjacent to the palate
This term refers to the inside surface of all teeth.
What does ‘lingual’ describe?
Surface of teeth that is in close proximity to the tongue

What does ‘buccal’ describe?
Surface of teeth that is in close proximity to the cheek
Buccal surfaces are found on both maxillary and mandibular teeth.
What are premolar (bicuspid) teeth?
2 teeth immediately behind the canine
Premolars are used for crushing and tearing food.
What are molar teeth?
The teeth behind the bicuspid teeth, there are 3 molars
The wisdom tooth is the last tooth in the dental arch.
What are posterior teeth?
The teeth at the back of the mouth including: pre-molars, molars
Posterior teeth are primarily used for grinding food.
