Q

What is the main roles of the Plasma membrane

A
  • Separates cells from other cells. (semi permeable barrier)
    • Controls movements of substances
    • Protects the cells
  • Communication ( to external environment )

Q

What is the cytoplasm

A

Cytoplasm ( contains all organelles and gel like substance)
- cytosol ( gel like substance surrounding organelles )
1. Cytosol - ICF 55%, 75% - 90% ( fluid )

Q

Plasma membrane structure

A
  • The fluid mosaic model describes the arrangement of molecules within the membrane
    • Made up of phospholipids (bi-layer)
    • Heads from the boundary ( tails face each other)
      Lipid bilayer – Phospholipids

Q

What can diffuse through the plasma membrane

A

Semi permeable: water, gasses, small fat molecules - pass easily
Large molecules (proteins) - don’t pass
Charged molecules ( Na+, K+, Cl- etc) - pass through channels
