The cell/The plasma membrane (ORAL SCIENCE) Flashcards
What is the Plasma membrane
The outer covering of the cell (contains cell within)
What is the main roles of the Plasma membrane
- Separates cells from other cells. (semi permeable barrier)
- Controls movements of substances
- Protects the cells
- Communication ( to external environment )
What is the cytoplasm
Cytoplasm ( contains all organelles and gel like substance)
- cytosol ( gel like substance surrounding organelles )
1. Cytosol - ICF 55%, 75% - 90% ( fluid )
Difference Intercellular fluid and Intercellular fluid
Intercellular fluid - in the cell
Intercellular fluid - in-between cells
Plasma membrane structure
- The fluid mosaic model describes the arrangement of molecules within the membrane
- Made up of phospholipids (bi-layer)
- Heads from the boundary ( tails face each other)
Lipid bilayer – Phospholipids
Tails are —-
Heads are—–
Tails are hydrophobic
Heads are Hydrophilic
What can diffuse through the plasma membrane
Semi permeable: water, gasses, small fat molecules - pass easily
Large molecules (proteins) - don’t pass
Charged molecules ( Na+, K+, Cl- etc) - pass through channels
