Tooth Morphology Flashcards
What is the primary dentition?
The first set of 20 primary/deciduous teeth
What is the permanent dentition?
32 secondary/adult teeth
What are permanent teeth that replace deciduous teeth called?
succedaneous teeth
When does the mixed dentition period occur?
6 to 12 years of age
What is the maxillary (upper) arch?
part of the skull, not capable of movement
What is the mandibular (lower) arch?
movable arch through the TMJ, applies force to the maxillary arch
What is the name of the process in which both arches are in contact?
occlusion
Explain the alignment of the teeth in both arches.
all teeth touch the adjacent tooth except the last tooth in each arch
What divisions can the dentition be divided into?
Quadrants
Sextants - Two posterior (5 each), One anterior (6 teeth)
What is the mesial surface?
surface towards the midline
What is the distal surface?
surface away from the midline
What is the labial surface?
the “outside” surface on the anterior teeth towards lips
What is the lingual surface?
the “inside” surface
What is the incisal edge?
the biting/cutting edge on anterior teeth
What is the buccal surface?
the “outside” surface on posterior teeth towards the cheek
What is the occlusal surface?
pulverizing/chewing surface
What general principle of tooth structure is true for all teeth?
the tooth will narrow as it reaches closer to the cervical line
What is the purpose of the crown of each tooth touching?
- Prevents food from being stuck between teeth
- Stabilizes the dentition
- Protects interproximal gingival tissue during mastication
What is the bulge or widest point of the crown called?
height of contour
What is usually considered the height of contour on the proximal surfaces?
contact areas of mesial and distal surfaces
What is an embrasure?
Triangular space near the gingiva between the proximal surfaces of two adjoining teeth
