Toolmarks Flashcards
What is a toolmark?
The mark which results from the contact of an implement (tool) with a softer surface
What is a tool?
The harder of two objects which when brought together into contact with each other results in the softer object being marked
An object used to gain mechanical advantage
What is toolmark identification?
An empirical comparative analysis that can determine if a striation or impression was produced by a particular tool (or not)
What are the two types of toolmark?
Impressed tool marks
Striation tool marks
What is a impressed toolmark?
Compressive force that leaves a compression
E.g. hammer, firing pin, breechface
What is a striation tool mark?
Lateral force and motion resulting in scratches across a surface.
What are the categories of classes of toolmarks?
Class characteristics
Individual characteristics
Subclass characteristics
What is a class characteristic?
Measurable features of a specimen which indicate a restricted group source.
Design features determined prior to manufacture of the tool.
What is a subclass characteristic?
Features that may be produced during manufacturing that are consistent among items. Fabricated by same tool in the same approximate state of wear.
More restrictive that class characteristics.
Steps when locating toolmark at scene?
- General photograph, take notes.
- Barcode toolmarks and re-photograph
- Take examination quality photographs of marks
- Mix mikrosil and cast onto toolmarks. Photograph with mikrosil on.
- Remove mikrosil and re-photograph
- Take close up photographs of mikrosil cast.
- If possible seize whole item.
- Package casts into boxes, seal sign and barcode. Lodge at station.
How many mikrosil casts should be made of same toolmark ?
2
What do you categories mikrosil cast as on FR?
Mikrosil Cast
What items would you collect instead of or as well as casting?
Door handles, wire, chain links
When should you collect foreign residue?
Foreign residues need to be sampled prior to toolmark comparison at BU.
What is a foreign residue?
Something not original to the tool or toolmark. Example- may be paint transfer from tool to tool mark or vice versa.
