ASU And Fire Flashcards
What is acceptable packaging for fire debris?
Fire debris sampling bag (polymers)
Friction Lid Tin (FLT)
Glass vial screw cap
Glass and paint acceptance criteria
Discussions have been had with SOC or IO
AND suspects known
OR
fBOE required and all control and recovered samples are submitted together and appropriately packaged
What is the fire triangle?
Heat
Oxygen
Fuel
Required for a fire
Two types of glass analysis
Physical fit (jigsaw)
Comparative analysis- compared based on thickness, colour, fluorescence and refractive index (RI)
What are the types of glass
Glass from windows and doors
Vehicle
Container
What do you need when glass sampling?
Need to collect 4 samples for control from different locations within the control glass source
Collect samples from all known broken sources
Don’t take from the ground
How do you package glass?
In plastic screw cap vials
Can also place in paper/cardboard and place in heat seal plastic bag
Package all items separately (clothing)
What are the coats of paint?
4- substrate on bottom
Primer
Surfacer
Basecoat
Clear coat
What type of analyses on paint ?
Comparative analysis. Layer sequence, appearance, chemical composition
Do you need a control sample for paint sample?
Yes need a control sample that is taken within close proximity to foreign sample
What do you need when taking a paint sample ?
Need a full layer scrapping down to the substrate. Important for layer sequence comparison
What is better a paint chip or smear?
Paint chip is better as it preserve the layer sequence. Has layer integrity.
How do you package paint sample?
Need to package fragments in folded paper and place into container or CSPB
GSR acceptance guidelines ? Samples not accepted when-
- SERT have been involved
- shooter made admissions to owning/ handling firearms
- secondary transfer
- over since hours since incident
- suicide and no letter from coronial support
- no one has previously loaded with ASU re exhibits and then being lodged
What are the stages of fires?
Incipient
Growth
Flashover- not technically stage
Full room involvement
Decay
