- guided conversations in which only the topics are pre determined and new questions or insights arise as a result of the discussion
- sensitive, open minded, probing questions

A
- flexible
- tailored to specific situations
- throw up avenues for new investigation

A
- for later analysis
- need to be able to attribute quotes to people

A

- interviewee can be self conscious and guarded
- transcription is time consuming

- usually an hour
- minimum 10- some do 30

A
- often used within a larger study using a survey but also interviews (triangulation)
- direct comments at the researcher
- interactive
- collective as well as self identity
