Tonify the qi and strengthens the Spleen
Sx: Pallid complexion, low and soft voice, reduced appetite, loose stools, and weakness in the limbs.
T: pale

Classic presentation of spleen qi xu caused by improper eating habits, excessive deliberation and overwork.
Strengthens the spleen, transforms phlegm, stops vomiting. For concurrent deficient spleen qi and phlegm
Sx: loss of appetite, nausea or vomiting, focal distention and a stifling sensation in the chest/epigastrium, and often coughing of copious, thin and white sputum.

Four gentlemen
ren shen - ginseng (tonify qi)

zhi ban xia - pinellia (transform phlegm)
In addition to tonifying the qi, this focuses on the formula’s action on removing obstruction to the middle burner by phlegm w/ rebellious qi of the stomach and lungs.
Augments the qi, strengthens the spleen, leaches out dampness and stops diarrhea
Sx: loose stools, reduced appetite, weakness of the extremities, weight loss, distention and a stifling sensation in the chest and epigastrium, pallid and wan complexion, possible vomiting.
T: pale with a white coating
P: thin, moderate or deficient pulse

Spleen qi xu leading to internally generated dampness.
Tonifies the middle burner, augments the qi raises the yang, lifts what has sunken
Sx: (1) dizziness, unsteadiness, imparied or unclear vision, deafness, tinnitus, shortness of breath, laconic speech, a weak voice, a shiny pale complexion, reduced intake of food, loose stools
T: pale
P: frail
(2) Qi xu fever, intermittent fever that worsens upon exertion, spontaneous sweating, aversion to cold, a thirst for warm beverages
T: pale and swollen
P: large but forceless
(3) Sinking of the middle burner: hemorrhoids, rectal or uterine prolapse, prolapse of the internal organs, chronic diarrhea or dystentery, irregular uterine bleeding, reduced intake of food, loose stools
T: pale
P: soft

This formula is the same as Liu jun zi tang - six gentlemen decoction but minus the fu ling - poria and ban xia - pinellia. Poria is downward draining and we want to lift the qi in this presentation. Chai hu and huang qi provide the lifting action.

Sx: aversion to drafts, spontaneous sweating, recurrent colds, a shiny pale complexion

For defiency of the exterior with weak and unstable wei qi causing the pores to be unable to close. This leaves someone susceptible to exterior invasion
Augments the qi, generates fluid, preserves the yin, stops excessive sweating
Sx: chronic cough with sparse sputum that is difficult to expectorate, shortness of breath, spontaneous sweating, dry mouth and tongue
T: pale-red with dry thin coat
P: deficient, rapid, thin
