Tongue Flashcards
What is tongue what does it do
striated (skeletal) muscular organ covered by mucosa
Manipulates ingested material during mastification and swallowing
What are the parts of the tongue and the surfaces
root, body, apex
superior surface called dorsum linguae and inferior surface
What lies between the border of the body and the root
V shaped groove or dorsal surface called SULCUS TERMINALIS
Features of lower surface of the tongue
smooth
lining mucosa
Features of dorsal surface of tongue
irregular
many papillae
lingual tonsils
The mucosa of the dorsal surface forms 4 types of papillae:
FILIFORM: *most numerous, conical shape, keratinized tips
* provides rough surface to aid move of food
* NO TASTE BUDS
FUNGIFORM: * rounded top part narrower base
* spread between filiform, look red bumps
FOLIATE: * parallel ridges on the side of the tongue
* diminishes with age
VALLATE: * largest papillae 1-3mm
* align in front of sulcus terminalis
What are the 4 proper muscles of the tongue
superior/ inferior longitudinal muscle - constriction makes longer and thinner
vertical muscle- decrease thickness
transverse muscle
