Oral cavity Flashcards
What does oral cavity consist of
lips, tongue, teeth, salivary glands
types of mucosa found in oral cavity
LINING: *strat squamous nonkeratinized epithelium
* internal aspect cheek and lip, floor of mouth, inferior
surface of tongue.
*Lining mucosa overlies thick submucosa containing n
salivary glands
MASTICORY:* Parakeratinized epithelium
* Found areas prone to friction, hard palate+gums
* lamina propria in these regions rests directly on
the underlying bone
SPEACIALIZED:* dorsal aspect of tongue, features papillae
How do lips and cheek share similar structure
external=skin internal=skeletal muscles
submucosal +mucosal layer
superficial transition zone=red margin/ vermillion
What 3 parts are the lip subdivided into
Cutaneous (outer)
intermediate
Mucosal (inner)
What consists the cutaneous part of the lip
- Stratified squamous keratinized epithelium
- sweat and sebaceous glands
- hair follicles
What consists of the intermediate part of lip
- Stratified squamous keratinized epithelium
- Stratum corneum becomes thinner
- Vermillion zone: red due to papillae with dense capillary plexus near surface + Meissner nerve endings
What consists the mucosal part of lip
- Stratified squamous nonkeratinized (parakeritinized)
*many minor labial salivary glands
What is the main muscle on the floor of the cavity
mylohyoid muscle
