tongue Flashcards
when does the tongue begin to develop ?
at about 4 weeks
what does the first pharyngeal arch form ?
tuberculun impar arises in the midline in the mandibular process and is flanked by 2 lingual swellings which quickly enlarge and merge with each other and the tuberculum impar to form the large mass from which the mucous membrane of the anterior two thirds of the tongue is formed
what does the 3rd pharyngeal arch form ?
large midline swelling called the hypobranchial eminence that gives rise to the mucous covering the root or posterior 1/3rd of the tongue
what is responsible for the motor nerve supply of the tongue ?
hypoglossL NERVE EXCEPT PALATOGLOSSUS WHUCH IS SUPPLIED BY VAGUS NERVE
what nerves are responsible for the sensory supply of the anterior 2/3rds of the tongue ?
lingual branch of trigeminal nerve
what nerve is responsible for the taste sensation of the anterior 2/3rds of the tongue ?
chorda tympani , branch of facial nerve
what nerve is responsible for the sensory and taste sensations of the posterior 1/3rd of the tongue ?
glossopharyngeal
describe the features of filliform pappilae .
cone shaped structures each with a core of connective tissue surrounded by a thick keratinized epithelium
they are the most numerous pappilae on the tongue
they are not associated with taste buds /
describe the structure of fungiform papillae .
scattered on the dorsal surface inbetween filliform papillae
elevated smooth red structures that are have highly vascularized connective tissue core covered by thin nonkeratinized epithelium
describe the structure of circumvallate pappilae /
located at the junction of anterior 2/3rds and posterior 1/3rd of the tongue . 8-12 in number
lined with taste buds and also openings of serous glands . the secretions from these serous glands washes away food for renewal of taste
