what is a neoplasm ?
growth of tissue made up of cells that continue to grow autonomously even after the stimulus for proliferation is removed
what are the 2 types of tumors and how are they different ?
benign tumors: grow locally and slowly , while compressing nearby tissue .
malignant tumors grow into adjacent tissue and can spread to other parts of the body
what is the structure that surrounds benign tumors called ?
fibrous capsule
what is the level of differentiation of benign tumor cells?
they are well differentiated and resemble the tissue from which they arise
what is the level of differentiation of malignant tumor cells ?
they fail to differentiate and may not resemble the tissue from which they arise
what term is used to describe loss of uniform shape when describing tumor cells ?
pleomorphism
what is metastasis ?
tumor implants in distant sites due to spread from original site
where do malignant tumors commonly metastasize to ?
liver and lungs through blood stream
what pathways could malignant tumors pass through in order to metastasize ?
lymph vessels
blood vessels
body cavities
