- results in them having a better quality of life + enabling them to live outside of a hospital/institutionalised setting

- patients receive reinforcement rewards in the form of tokens IMMEDIATELY after good bhv e.g. self care or social interaction
- tokens can then be exchanged for goods/ priveleges e.g. tv, walk outside, sweets
