What issues should be considered with regards to spaying?
Is there any reason not to spay? Does the owner understand the reasons and is aware of the possible complications for/of spaying? When should the surgery be performed? Which surgical technique should be used? What non surgical options are there?
Why might spaying before puberty be non-beneficial?
Non-resolving juvenile vaginitis
Congenital urethral sphincter mechanism incompetance

What are the cons of pre-pubertal nutering?
More risky for inexperienced surgeon Increased risk of orthopaedic disease? Infantile vulva Coat more fluffy More dominant behaviour?
When should neutering of mature bitches be avoided and why?
During oestrus - haemorrhage
28d-4m post ovulation - risk of permanent psuedopregnancy
What is a disadvantage of OV compared to OVH?
If hormone treatment is needed in the future then this may still affect the rest of the reproductive tract.
What can be used to prevent pregnancy post mating?
Anglepristone - a progesterone antagonist.
Why is castration probably not a good method of controlling dog behaviour? And how can this be mitigated?
The effects are not reliable or predictable for the individual dog.
Use a therapeutic trial with progestagens and behaviour training and see if either of these help first.
What is early age nuetering defined as?
<20 weeks old
What is the current balance of evidence for early neutering in favour of?
Early is best for cats but less clear cut for dogs
Is age a barrier to performing surgery?
No

Risk of vonWillebrands disease
High risk for USMI
What is the recommended time to spaying a cat?
4 months
