Male genital Pathology Flashcards
Why does pathology of the scrotum/tunica vaginalis often occur? How does degenerarion of the testes result from this?
Often changes are associated with skin pathology somewhere else. Thermoregulatory failure leads to testicular degeneration.
What common neoplasias occur in the scrotum of the dog?
Varicose hemangioma
Mast cell tumours (dog)
Hemangiosarcoma (dog)
Papillomas (in the boar)
What sorts of diseases often affect the TV?
Those extending from the peritoneum e.g. ascites, n.b. that tumours are very rare.
What is the most common intersex phenotype in animals?
Male pseudohemaphrodites - external female genitalia with testes where ovaries should be.
What happens to cryptorchid testes?
They often are hypoplastic and fibrotic. Interstitial collagen deposition may also occur and spermatogenesis thermally supressed.
How might a hypoplastic testes differ to a degenerate testes?
Hypoplastic - small but normal consistency (also congenital/pre-pubertal)
Degenerate - reduced size testes with firm consistency (likely to occur post puberty i.e. not congenital)
Microscopically degenerate may be similar to hypoplastic but with fibrosis and granuloma formation.
What are the causes of orchitis in animals?
- Haematogenous e.g. B. abortus
- Trauma
- Reflux orchitis
What is the likely source of infection of epididymitis?
Ascending infection from accessory sex glands and urogenital tract.
What are the main types of testicular neoplasia?
- Interstitial (Leydig) cell tumour
- Sertoli cell tumour
- Germ cell tumours
What is the microscopic appearance of a leydig cell tumour?
Polyhedral cells packed in small groups.
Animals with which condition are more likely to develop sertoli cell tumours?
Cryptorchid animals
What is a common side effect of sertoli cell tumours?
Feminisation due to the production of oestragen (and often inhibin)
What is a seminoma and describe its gross appearance?
It is a tumour of spermatogonia. grossly appears as a soft cream mass that bulges when cut.
What cells is a teratoma derived from?
All 3 germ layers.
What is funiculitis and when is it often seen?
Inflammation of the spermatic chord. Seen after open castration
