what is acute pain

A
  • onset: pain is present less than 3 months
  • locking: jaw is closed and cannot open
  • is jaw open and cannot close
  • how many seconds, minutes, hours, or days for locking, frequency
  • malocclusion: was it gradual or sudden? date first noticed or activity caused it
  • acute sudden malocclusion- diagnoses myospasm, myositis, fracture, tumor or edema

what is chronic

A
  • onset: pain is present more than 6 months
  • ask pt if they have had this pain before
  • jaw locking more than 3 months
  • gradual malocclusion more than 3 months: likely arthritis or osteochrondroma
