what is acute pain
A
- onset: pain is present less than 3 months
- locking: jaw is closed and cannot open
- is jaw open and cannot close
- how many seconds, minutes, hours, or days for locking, frequency
- malocclusion: was it gradual or sudden? date first noticed or activity caused it
- acute sudden malocclusion- diagnoses myospasm, myositis, fracture, tumor or edema

what is chronic
A
- onset: pain is present more than 6 months
- ask pt if they have had this pain before
- jaw locking more than 3 months
- gradual malocclusion more than 3 months: likely arthritis or osteochrondroma
