Q

How do we instruct a patient to perform a opening MET-agonist

A

Have pt give a 10% contraction attempting to open mouth wider

after 8 seconds the pt relaxes then takes a deep breath and yawns to stretch further

now the PT takes the patient further into opening and hold for 8 seconds while breathing

repeat

Q

How to we instruct a pt to perform an opening MET-antagonst

A

Instruct pt to give light contraction to close

after 8 seconds the pt takes deep breathe and performs yawn

now PT stretches them into further opening, hold for 8 seconds while breathing

repeat

Q

How do we perform an agonist suboccipital MET?

A

Suboccipitals do ext, so therefore we are USING them in an agonist MET in order to STRETCH THE SAME MUSCLE we are using and improve flexion

Pt looks up with Cv ext against resistance (“look up with your eyes”

Now pt looks down with eyes (no resistance)

Q

What are 3 exercises for suprahyoid facilitation

A

Tongue roll opening- Insruct pt to slowily open mouth while rolling tongue along palette towards the throat

N exercise- Open mouth and say the N sound while depressing the jaw (dont move cervical spine)

Q

How can we train a pt to have a normal opening pattern at the TMJ

A

Progression in order:

  1. Manually facilitate proper opening in front of mirror
  2. Provide tactile cues in front of mirror
  3. No tactile cueing, just visual feedback from mirror
  4. now have them open without being infront of mirror

Q

How can you train lateral excursion strength

A

have patient bite down on stack of tongue depressors held together by rubber band and slide mandible side to side

Note: also works for protrusion/retursion if you slide forward and back

16
Q

How do you perform an antagonist MET for L lateral excursion

A

Bring pt to maximum L lateral excursion

Resist R lateral excursion from this point, 10% contraction for 5-10 seconds

Bring pt further into L lateral excursion

17
Q

How do you perform an agonist opening MET?

A

have pt depress jaw to pain free barrier

resist pt on an isometric contraction into FURTHER OPENING, 10% contraction for 8-10 seconds

have pt perform yawn and relax into new barrier

18
Q

How do you perform an antagonist opening MET

A

have pt depress jaw to pain free barrier

resist pt on an isometric contraction into CLOSING, 10% contraction for 8-10 seconds

have pt perform yawn and relax into new barrier

19
Q

Which lateral pterygoid is performing L lateral excursion?

A

R lateral pterygoid
