TMJ Flashcards
1
Q
What are the 3 types of joints?
A
- Fibrous
- Cartilaginous
- Synovial
2
Q
Describe fibrous joints
A
- Suture
- > Permits growth, but little or no movement
- > Articulating surfaces covered by osteogenic layer
- Gomphosis: joint between socket to bone joined by fibres
- Syndesmosis: between two bones joined by interosseous ligament, limited movement
3
Q
Describe cartilaginous joints
A
- Permits little/no movement
- Primary (synchondroses):
- > Joint btw bones bound by hyaline cartilage
- Secondary (symphyses)
- > Bone-cartilage fibrous tissue-cartilage-bone
4
Q
Describe synovial joints
A
- Permits significant movement
- Covered by hyaline cartilage
- Surrounded by joint capsule filled with synovial fluid
- Synovial membrane lines non-articular surfaces
- Joint cavity may be divided by articular disc
