Main symptoms for Wind-Cold-Damp invasion, Qi and Blood stagnation, Qi ad Blood Xu and Liver and Kidney Xu
Pain and soreness at temporal mandibular joint: alleviated by warmth, aggravated by opening of the mouth, especially chewing.
Some cases: difficulty opening the mouth or clicking sounds. Could have a temporal headache.
Definition of TMJ
Disorder of TMJ structure characterized by pain, muscle spasm, clicking of the joint and limitation of Jaw movement. Belongs to the Bi syndrome in TCM
Accompanied symptoms of Wind Cold Damp invasion
Worse at cold, cloudy, rainy weather or cold wet environment. No local redness and heat sensation. Cold have general joint pain
Tongue and Pulse for Wind Cold Damp invasion
Tongue coating: Thin and White
Pulse: Wiry and tight
Worse when experiencing stress or emotional disturbances
May have history of injury
Qi and Blood Stagnation
Accompanying SnS of Qi and Blood Xu
Palpitation, dizziness, abdominal distention, poor appeitite, loose stool, fatigue
Tongue: Pale tongue with scallops
Pulse: Thin and white
Qi And blood Xu
Loose teeth, dizziness, blurred vision, tinnitus, soreness and weakness of lumbar region and knee joint, insomnia, dream disturbed sleep
Liver and kidney Xu
Tongue and pulse of Liver and Kidney Xu
Tongue: Red, little coating
Pulse: Deep and thready
How would you education a patient with TMJ dysfunction?
Regulate diet by eating soft food and semi liquid
Change unilateral chewing habit
Treat somatic disease and general disease
Exercise, avoid wind cold damp invasion
What other remedies would you recommend or use?
Auricular - Upper, lower jaw, face, cheek, SJ, Liver, GB, ST, LI, Shen men - moderate stimulation, self massage
Electric acupuncture use mix waves: 100/10Hz
1. GB3, SJ 21, 17
2. ST7, SI19, ST6 (all on the disease side)
