ROM Exercises for TMJ
Mouth open
Mouth closed
Lateral deviation
Retraction
Protrusion
Muscle Relaxation and Tongue Proprioception control
Tongue on hard palate
Draw circles or letters
Tip of tongue on hard palate
Blow air out to vibrate tongue, “making rrr sound”
Clicking sound with tongue on roof of mouth
Jaw quickly opens and returns
Jaw Muscle and Joint Proprioception
Tongue on top of mouth- open and close jaw through first half of ROM
If jaw deviates with opening, have patient practice lateral deviation to opposite side
Gentle isometrics on movements of jaw
