Current recommendations shared by transmasculine and LGBTQ community organizations for healthy binding include
wearing a correctly sized binder, avoiding the use of elastic bandages, duct tape, or plastic wrap, removing binders when sleeping, and limiting binding to 8-12 hours/day
clinical implication of chest binding
HCP should regularly assess physical outcomes and mental health benefits
Assess binding practice
HCP should be able to compare the physical harms by bindings with the mental health or quality of life benefits reported by the patient
Use clinical judgment to prioritize symptoms and engage in SHARED decision making
goal of rehab of chest surgery
limit scaring
immediate goal post top surgery
: 2 surgical drains (typically 7-10 days), compression vest (important to prevent post op bleeding and fluid collections)
what to avoid first 4 weeks top surgery
avoid lifting arms above 90 degrees away from your body and OH. Do not push/pull/lift things greater than 5lbs (**important for scar healing) **Some may delay longer for scar healing
scar mobs can begin when after top surgery
6-8 weeks post op
some protocol for mastectomy say 3 weeks
