Tissues, Organs and Systems Flashcards
What is an exchange system made of?
Specialised cells.
What is differentiation?
The process by which cells become specialised for a particular job.
What is a tissue?
A group of similar cells that work together to carry out a particular function.
What are three examples of tissues?
- Muscular tissue
- Glandular tissue
- Epithelial tissue
What is an organ?
A group of different tissues working together to perform a certain function.
What is the role of muscular tissue in the stomach?
To move the stomach wall to churn the food.
What is the role of glandular tissue in the stomach?
To make digestive juices.
What is the role of epithelial tissue in the stomach?
To cover the inside and outside.
What is a system?
A group of organs working together to perform a function.
What is the function of the glands in the digestive system?
To produce digestive juices.
What is the function of the stomach in the digestive system?
To digest the food.
What is the role of the liver in the digestive system.
To produce bile.
What is the function of the small intestine in the digestive system?
To digest food and absorb soluble food molecules.
What is the function of the large intestine?
To absorb water from undigested food leaving faeces.
What are three examples of plant organs?
- Stems
- Roots
- Leaves
What is the function of the stem in a plant?
To support the plant and to assist in the transport of water and nutrients between the roots and leaves.
What is the function of the roots?
To absorb water and mineral ions for the plant, and to hold the plant in place.
What is the function of the leaves in a plant?
Photosynthesis
What are three examples of plant tissues?
- Mesophyll
- Xylem and phloem
- Epidermal
What is the function of the Mesophyll tissue?
To photosynthesise.
What is the function of the xylem and phloem?
To transport water, minerals and sucrose around the plant.
What is the function of the epidermal tissue?
To cover the whole plant.
