Tissues, Organs and Systems Flashcards
What is a tissue?
A group of similar cells performing a function
What is a muscular tissue?
A tissue which contacts to bring about movement
What is a glandular tissue?
A tissue which can produce substances such as enzymes and hormones
What is an epithelial tissue?
A tissue which covers parts of an organism
What does the muscular tissue do in the stomach?
Churns the content
What does the glandular tissue do in the stomach?
Produces digestive juices
What does the epithelial tissue do in the stomach?
Covers the inside and outside of the stomach
What is an organ?
A group of similar tissues performing a function
What is a system?
A group of similar organs performing a function
What is an example of a system?
The digestive system
What is an example of a gland?
Pancreas or salivary gland
During the development of multicellular organisms, cells…?
Differentiate to perform different functions
What do glands do?
Produce digestive juices
What do the stomach and small intestine do?
Digestion occurs here
What does the liver do?
Produces bile
What does the small intestine do?
Absorbs soluble food
What does the large intestine do?
Absorbs water from the undigested food, producing faeces
What do plant organs include?
Stems, roots and leaves
What is an epidermal tissue?
It covers the plant
What is carried out in the mesophyll?
Photosynthesis
What do the xylem and phloem do?
Transport substances around the plant
