Enzymes Flashcards
What is the enzyme which catalysed the change of starch into glucose?
Amylase
What is the enzyme which catalyses the change from fats to fatty acids & glycerol?
Lipase
What is the enzyme which catalyses the change from protein to amino acids?
Protease
Where is amylase made?
Salivary gland & pancreas
Where is lipase made?
Pancreas
Where is protease made?
Stomach and pancreas
Where does amylase work?
Mouth and small intestine
Where does lipase work?
Small intestine
Where does protease work?
Stomach and small intestine
What happens to an enzyme when it is in too high heat?
It denatures and the substrate can no longer fit and then reaction can no longer take place
What acid does the stomach produces?
Hydrochloric acid (the enzymes in the stomach work best in acidic conditions)
What does the liver produce and why?
Bile. It neutralises the acid which is added to foods in the stomach. This provides alkaline conditions in which enzymes in the small intestine work most effectively
What is the substrate or invertase?
Sucrose
What is the product of invertase?
Glucose
What is the use of invertase?
Makes runny chocolates
