Tissues & Organs Flashcards
What is a tissue?
Group of cells carrying out a common function and have a similar structure
What is the function of muscle cells?
They work together to contract and bring about movement.
What is the function of glandular tissue?
To produce substances such as enzymes and hormones
What is the function of the epidermal tissue In plants?
It covers the plant
What does mesophyll tissue do?
Used for photosynthesis
What is the function of xylem and phloem tissue?
Transporting substances around the plant
What is an Organ?
A collection of tissues working together
What types of tissue does the stomach have?
Muscular, to churn food
Glandular, to produce digestive juices
Epithelial, to cover the stoumach
What is an organ system
A collection of organs carrying out a similar function.
What happens to cells during the development of multicellular organisms?
They differentiate and do different functions
What type of cells do glandular tissues contain
Secretory cells
What does epithelial tissue do
Covers the outside of your body as well as your internal organs
What do mesophyll cells do and how are they adapted to do this
Contain lots of chloroplasts and can carry out photosynthesis
What do xylem and phloem tissues do?
Transport things around the plants; they can carry water and dissolved mineral ions and dissolved food from the roots to the leaves
What 3 types of tissue does the stomach contain and what do they do within the stomach?
Muscular tissue; churn the food and digestive juices together
Glandular tissue; produce the digestive juices needed to break down food
Epithelial tissue; which covers the inside and the the outside of an organ
What 2 important functions does the pancreas have?
Makes hormones to control our blood sugar
It also makes some enzymes that digest our food
Which organs have developed for exchange to take place
There is an exchange of gases in the lungs
Digested food moves from the small intestine into the blood
Many different dissolves substances and filtered out of the blood into the kidney tubules some of them move back from the tubules into the blood
How can you ensure the concentration gradient remains steep
Many organs have a good blood supply bringing substances in and taking them out
What are kidney tubules
A structure in the kidney where substances are reabsorbed back into the blood
What is a multicellular organism
One made up of many different cells
What is the stomach
An organ
List some organs
heart, kidneys, liver, lungs, pancreas, and small intestines.
List some tissues
blood, blood vessels, bones, bone marrow, cartilage, connective tissues, eyes, heart valves, and skin.
