Bacteria & Yeast Flashcards
What features do bacteria have?
Flagella, plasmids, cell wall, cell membrane, flagella, slime capsule, DNA (not in nucleus)
What do yeast cell have?
Nucleus, cell wall, cytoplasm, cell membrane
What is special about bacterium?
No nucleus so the genetic material is in the cytoplasm
How long are most bacteria
1 μm
Why can you see a bacterial colony with your naked eye
They grow into many millions of bacteria
What are plasmids
Small circular bits of DNA carrying extra genetic information
What may some bacteria have on the outside of the cell wall
A slime capsule
Where do we use bacteria?
Yoghurt and cheese, sewage treatment and medicines
What size are yeast cells
3-4 yμm
How do yeasts reproduce
Asexual budding
What is asexual budding
A new yeast cell grows out from the original cell to form a new separate yeast organism
How do yeast cells respire in a supply of plenty of oxygen
Aerobically
What is Brocken down and what is produced in respiration of a yeast cell
Oxygen is used to break down sugar to provide energy for the cell. Water and co2 are produced
How will a yeast cell retire in little oxygen
Anaerobic ally
What will a yeast cell produce in anaerobic respiration
When the yeast cell breakdown sugar in the absence of oxygen ethanol and co2 are produced
