Tissues and systems Flashcards
How are cells, tissues, and organs related?
Cells make up tissues, similar tissues make up organs.
What are the four types of tissue
Epithelial, Connective, Muscle, Nervous
Where is internal Epithelial tissue found? and where is external epithelial tissue found?
- Inside: Lining of digestive tract, lining of hollow organs (Heart, lungs, urinary tract)
- External: Skin
T or F, Epithelial tissue contains no blood vessels, except in the gastrointestinal tract?
T
What are the different classifications of epithelial tissue and its meaning?
Squamous: Flat/scale-like
Cuboidal: Cube shape
Columnar: Column like
Transitional: Variable in shape, stretchy
What do the terms Simple, stratified, and pseudostratified mean?
Simple: Single layer
Stratified: Multiple layer
Pseudostratified: Looks stratified but is actually one layer.
What are the types of Epithelial membranes?
- Cutaneous: skin, covers body surface
- Serous: Double layered membrane, lines body cavities and some organs
- Visceral: Wraps around organ surface, lines inner thoracic cavity
- Parietal: Lines body cavity
- Mucous: Lines openings of body that leads to external environment
What is the most abundant tissue?
Connective Tissue
Where is connective tissue found?
Bones, muscles, membranes and skin
A collection of noncellular material in which cells are embedded is called an..?
Extracellular Matrix
What are the four classifications of connective tissue?
Connective tissue proper
Cartilage
Bone
Blood and lymph
What are the types of connective tissue proper?
Loose: Web-like mesh
Adipose: Body fat
Dense: Tightly packed
What membrane is found in spaces between joints? What kind of fluid does it secrete?
Synovial membrane; Synovial fluid
What are the three types of muscle tissue?
Skeletal- Striated; attached to bone; voluntary
Cardiac- Walls of heart; Striated; involuntary
Smooth- Walls tubes and hollow organs; not striated; involuntary
What tissue acts as a rapid messenger for the body?
Nervous tissue
